Experiment Triboluminescence: Glowing sugar cubes – Light through friction
What you need:
- Sugar cubes
- A dark room
- A pair of pliers or the possibility to rub the cubes together
Here’s how:
- Go into a dark room.
- Break a sugar cube with the pliers or firmly rub two sugar cubes together.
- Watch closely: For a brief moment, you can see a bluish flash of light!
What happens?
When the sugar breaks, a weak, short-lived glow appears.
Why does this happen?
The sugar crystals break apart and release energy in the form of light. This is called triboluminescence—a special type of luminescence that occurs through mechanical friction.
